Introduction Love's New Possibilities
The three happiest days of my life were when my daughter was born, the day I married
my wife, and the birth of my grand- daughter. The saddest days of my life have been
when loved ones passed away, or when friends and family struggled through divorce
and separation. Each event either brought more love into my life or left me with less.
That's why I'm thrilled to offer you a book on my theory of love, a discovery I've
made and have been successfully testing for decades the theory that love is
nourishment. I'm confident this book will help you safeguard the love you have and
empower you to strengthen and deepen it, making it enduring and unshakable.
Over the last thirty years, I have helped countless people with their relationships. My
work with individuals and couples has been very successful, and my presentations at
major conferences are always well received. Despite this success, I resisted
compiling my theories of love and human development into a book because I did not
have hard scientific evidence to support my central thesis that love is vital nourishment.
In 2013, that changed. An eight-year scientific study conducted by Dr. Barbara
Fredrickson published its findings that, just as I predicted years before, love is in
fact nourishment. So, if you picked up this book because you want to improve your
life and your relationships, give the concepts and exercises a try and see for yourself
how trans- formative their practical applications are.
It is important to point out that your habits are deeply ingrained, and the actions and
reactions that have been repeated over a lifetime will take time to unlearn. Ask
yourself, ÒIs my happiness and that of those I love worth dedicating some time and effort?Ó
The ideas and exercises in this book will make an immediate difference, but the
deeper, life-changing results that come from mastering a new approach to love and
behavior take time. Patience and persistence are the keys to the kingdom.
